"I tend to see AND rather than OR logic. Thought should come before language but this does not mean language and thought are not interrelated. The more you know about anything and/or the better you learn a language/s and other pattern-related subjects, the more you think.
Saudade can be felt via music (it takes a good ear though) and probably other similar (spiritual) forms of expression. Jobim is an excellent artist to 'work on' if one wants to understand saudade.
Being proficient in a language does not always imply understanding its various aspects, for instance non-verbal communication or cognitive nuances. Being immersed in an art and/or being a good observer are much more reliable means to grasp a culture.
Besides, there is not a perfect test or tool yet to evaluate proficiency, the main problem being that evaluation depends on the adequacy of the test, the intelligence of the person/machine evaluating us as well as our state (of body and mind) during the test." (
