Introduction to Singularity Studies
Exploring Universal Evidence for Continously Accelerating Change

When asked to interpret the probability, mechanisms, and implications of a coming technological singularity (the emergence of human-surpassing machine intelligence, the imminent dominance of nonbiological computation), and to place this local acceleration in the framework of the universal acceleration that cosmologists, evolutionary biologists, and historians have noted since the emergence of life-bearing planets, every serious scholar learns to develop their own minimum set of topics and propositions necessary to the challenge. Here are ours, in outline form.
Singularity studies, a term simultaneously coined by Damien Broderick (The Spike, 1997/01) and myself, can be defined as any academic exploration of the multi-disciplinary evidence for accelerating change in physical and computational systems.
Developmental singularity studies, the variant of singularity studies with which this website is concerned, analyzes the wide spectrum of evidence for acceleration from a universal developmental perspective. Developmental singularity studies proposes that complexity emerges within all physical and computational systems (the universe and all of its subsystems) through a cyclic process of statistically determined convergence to a set of prespecified developmental forms, as occurs in the process of biological evolutionary development.
