The Reference Model for an
Open Archival Information System (
OAIS) (pdf) is a conceptual framework for an archival system dedicated to preserving and maintaining access to digital information over the long term. RLG, OCLC, many members of our respective organizations, and several groundbreaking international projects have played key roles in shaping the reference model and in adapting the reference model for use in libraries, archives and research repositories. And yet libraries and archives represent only a section of the community with interest in the
OAIS reference model.
Five years after the genesis of the effort, the
OAIS reference model continues to influence and inform organizations and researchers interested in preserving digital data—be it
space data, life sciences data, or government records—for the long term. The official web site for
OAIS activities is
http://ssdoo.gsfc.nasa.gov/nost/isoas/ and contains an abundance of information related to the effort including its history, documentation on the reference model and its development, overviews of regional efforts, and workshops (both past and future).
This site is meant to be an additional resource, developed to facilitate communication and collaboration between institutions incorporating the
OAIS reference model into local plans or adapting it for local use. The site will continue to develop as information is gathered and made available.
