Environmental, social and governance practices (ESG)
Approaches to integrating ESG into an investment strategy can include one or more of the following:
- Negative screening: Exclusion of companies from an investment universe based on certain practices or business characteristics.
- Positive screening: Inclusion of companies in an investment universe by virtue of their involvement in industries, products or services with particular environmental or social benefits (e.g. pharmaceuticals, or renewable energies).
- Evaluation of ESG‐management practices to identify the company’s vulnerability to ESG related risks.
The primary purpose of the PROGRESS ESG Risks Assessment tool is the latter: To identify a company’s vulnerability to ESG related risks. (Institute of Social Innovation, 2013).
