"Ballard (1982) argued that if family members cared for each other in an 'adequately caring and loving manner', then they would cope better with the handicapped child, who would in turn pose fewer problems. In other words, the stress associated with chronic problems may affect family members in different ways: but in a cohesive and caring family, individual will find successful coping strategies" (YULE; RUTTER, 1991).
