The always unfinished character of knowledge must be considered as a postulate of epistemology, since the act of knowing is never complete. The error cannot be completely eliminated. We are obliged to work with approximations, even in the so-called exact sciences. It is necessary, therefore, to understand how the unceasing rectification of thought takes place in the face of reality. For this reason, Bachelard dedicated this Essay on Approximate Knowledge, his doctoral thesis, to "accompanying knowledge in its task of refinement, precision and the search for clarity. (...) A philosophy of the inexact can propose a new meaning to concepts of reality and truth. " The thesis, when defended, received the Gegner Prize, and over time it became a classic of the philosophy of science (Bachelard, 2004).
