To take an exact account of the general tendency of any act, by which the interests of a community are affected, proceed as follows. Begin with any one person of those whose interests seem most immediately to be affected by it: / Para tirar a medida exata da tendência geral de qualquer ato, pelo qual os interesses de uma comunidade são afetados, proceda da seguinte forma. Tendency of the act with respect to the interests of the individual person / Tendência do ato com respeito aos interesses da pessoa individual

Sum up all the values of all the pleasures on the one side, and those of all the pains on the other. The balance, if it be on the side of pleasure, will give the good tendency of the act upon the whole, with respect to the interests of that individual person; if on the side of pain, the bad tendency of it upon the whole. / Some os valores de todos os prazeres de um lado e os valores de todas as dores do outro. O saldo, se do lado do prazer, vai dar a boa tendência do ato sobre o todo com respeito aos interesses dessa pessoa individual; se do lado da dor, a má tendência do ato sobre o todo.

Interests of total number or community of individuals concerned / Interesses do número total ou comunidade de indivíduos envolvidos

Take an account of the number of persons whose interests appear to be concerned; and repeat the above process with respect to each. / Meça o número de pessoas cujos interesses parecem estar envolvidos; e repita o processo acima com respeito a cada um.

Numbers expressive of the degrees of good tendency / Números expressivos dos graus de boa tendência

Sum up the numbers expressive of the degrees of good tendency, which the act has, with respect to each individual, in regard to whom the tendency of it is good upon the whole. / Some os números expressivos dos graus de boa tendência que o ato tem com respeito a cada indivíduo, em relação ao qual a tendência do ato é boa sobre o todo.

Numbers expressive of the degrees of bad tendency / Números expressivos dos graus de má tendência

Do this again with respect to each individual, in regard to whom the tendency of it is bad upon the whole. / Some os números expressivos dos graus de má tendência que o ato tem com respeito a cada indivíduo, em relação ao qual a tendência do ato é má sobre o todo.

General tendency of the act with respect to the total number or community of individuals concerned / Tendência geral do ato com respeito ao número total ou comunidade de indivíduos envolvidos

Take the balance which if on the side of pleasure, will give the general good tendency of the act, with respect to the total number or community of individuals concerned; if on the side of pain, the general evil tendency, with respect to the same community. / Avalie o saldo que, se do lado do prazer, vai dar a boa tendência geral do ato com respeito ao número total ou comunidade de indivíduos envolvidos. Se do lado da dor, a má tendência geral, com respeito à mesma comunidade.
